It can seem impossible to start and grow a successful youtube channel. Trust me for the last five years I have been trying to do just that! Following these three principles should kickstart you in the right direction.
Now when starting your youtube channel you need to keep these three things in mind. The first element is passion. If you don’t love the kind of videos you are making then you are not going to stick around long enough to see any kind of success. It takes years and years of hard work, I used to love making gaming videos and I would do that every single week. So you really need to love what you are doing otherwise you won’t stick around long enough to see any success.
The next element is skill. Are you good enough at what you do? For example, if you make art videos but you are really bad at art no one is going to want to watch your content. Now, there is a way to get around this which I will mention in just a second. But you want to provide value in each video so if you are terrible at what you are doing you are not providing any value to people and that means that nobody is going to stick around and watch your videos and subscribe to your channel.
However, if you aren’t very good at something, for example, say you love Rubik’s cubes but it takes you ten minutes to solve one, you can still make Rubik’s cube videos, you would just make sure that your audience knows that your channel is about your journey at getting better at solving Rubik’s cubes and that you aren’t already claiming to have “made it”. You can show your progress from when you first started to when you become fantastic at it, but you don’t want your audience to think that you are already meant to be good. Your audience needs to know that this is a journey and that you are not already there. So that is how if you’re not good enough but still love to make videos about a topic, you can.
Lastly, you need to make sure that there is a market for it. Do some research on youtube? Are other people making these kinds of videos? Are those channels getting views? If you love this weird type of curry cooking style or a game no one has ever heard of then there may not be an audience on youtube for it. So do some research. You need to know that you will be able to reach people by making your videos. You don’t want to make videos and have no one ever watch them. You also need to make sure there’s a way to monetize your videos because even if you never want to make youtube a full-time career, having a little bit of money to pay for the equipment or whatever else you need to make your videos is always helpful!
So when planning out your channel and planning what kind of videos you are going to make, make sure you research to see if there are people who are going to watch that type of content and that there are ways you can make money. Ads are not necessarily the best income stream so don’t focus on ads, but you can look at affiliate marketing, brand deals, consulting, courses and other income sources like that.
